Professor Lefteri H. Tsoukalas is the Director of Purdue’s Center for Intelligent Energy Systems (CiENS) see, https://engineering.purdue.edu/CiENS). He has considerable engineering experience in AI and ML methods and applications. He has served as head of the School of Nuclear Engineering at Purdue University and as Chairman of the US Nuclear Engineering Department Heads Organization (NEDHO). Dr. Tsoukalas has three decades of experience in intelligent systems with over 300 research publications in the area including a book titled “Fuzzy and Neural Approaches in Engineering” (John Wiley & Sons, New York, 1997) and the upcoming book “Fuzzy Logic: Applications in Artificial Intelligence, Big Data, and Machine Learning,” (McGraw Hill, New York, 2023). Dr Tsoukalas is a Fellow of the American Nuclear Society. In 2009, he was honored with the Humboldt Prize, Germany’s highest honor for international scientists.
Received the Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering from UTI, Iasi and the Habilitation degree from the University of Lisbon. He is currently a Professor at Iscte–IUL and a Senior Researcher with the Instituto de Telecomunicacoes. He has authored and coauthored ten patents, ten books, 18 book chapters, more than 400 papers in international journals and proceedings of international conferences with peer-to-peer review. His fields of interests are smart sensors and IoT for biomedical, environmental and precision agriculture applications, intelligent transportation, wireless sensor networks and visual senor networks, and artificial intelligence applied automated measurement systems. He is active on IEEE organization, where he serve as the Chair for IEEE IMS-TC13 and IEEE IMS Portugal chapter.
